Variegated Arrowroot leaf after fresh rains
Maranta Arundinacea ‘Variegata’, also known as arrowroot, maranta, West Indian arrowroot, obedience plant, Bermuda arrowroot, araru, araruta is a large perennial herb in the Marantaceae family, usually found in rainforest habitats. The papery leaves are elliptic or oblong-shaped and patterned differently. They are smooth-textured, glossy and the Variegata species produces attractive dark-light green foliage splashed with large chunks of creamy-white coloring. Like Calatheas, even the Arrowroot plant has the characteristic feature of folding up their leaves at dusk to dawn by means of the tiny geniculum, resembling an angular knee-like joint connecting it to the petiole.
These are fast-growing, clump-forming plant that spreads via its arrow-shaped rhizomes underground. This variety is grown more for its beautiful foliage over the flowers. The flowers are colored white and short-lived like some of the other prayer plant flowers.
Maranta Arundinacea is packed with amazing properties. The starch is taken from the root and the rhizome to make flour. Arrowroot flour can be used as a nutrition-rich food for infants and used in treating stomach and intestinal disorders, including diarrhea since it can be easily digested by the infants and the patients with weak digestion issues.
An infusion of the root has been traditionally used to treat urinary infections and the root is also known to be used as an antidote for some poison. They contain a good amount of potassium, iron, and vitamins, which is great for metabolism, circulation, heart health and can stimulate immune cells and boost the human immune system.
Arrowroot powder is frequently used in gluten-free, ancient cooking and it’s extremely versatile in the kitchen. The roots in powdered form are also used in Indian Cooking called as अरारोट
