The “Lady Palm” believed to originate from South China is one of the easiest palms to grow. Known as Rhapis Excelsa, they grow to a height of more than 10 feet tall with clumps reaching huge width. They come in many different varieties but can be broadly split into two main groups: green and variegated. When the Rhapis excelsa tends towards white leaves, the effect is a golden color, called “golden chlorophyll”.

Thick large leaves with blunt tips and wide segments gave them another common name “broadleaf lady palm”, that are strange species of fan palms which actually don’t exist in the wild.

Lady Palms can adapt to a wide range of growing conditions, soils, environments and most interiors, thus used in both tropical and subtropical landscapes throughout the world.

Lady Palms are great indoor plants, they thrive in any kind of light but do exceptionally well in the shade. Any place with indirect sunlight works best. The plant leaves tend to get darker and more variegated when grown indoors. The leaves may turn yellow and their tips might burn if moved to direct sunlight.

They can tolerate any type of soil as long as there’s proper drainage. An evenly moist soil works great, standing water in the soil might promote root rot. They can tolerate some dry periods in between waterings and should be watered only when the top 1 inch of soil gets dried. It’s important to give them average fertilizing in order to bring out the proper leaf colors.

Misting helps in keep the fronds clean from dust. When grown outdoors, lady palms attract many tropical butterflies and also serves as a home to nesting birds. A well known houseplant as they help clean toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, benzene, and ammonia from the air. They are non-poisonous for cats and dogs and fairly easy to care, making them perfect for beginners!
