Watermelon Peperomia – Peperomia Argyreia – Plant care Guide

Watermelon Peperomia – Peperomia Argyreia.

Watermelon Peperomia – Peperomia Argyreia or Watermelon begonia, these are a part of the Piperaceae family which has over 1100+ varieties and are native to South America. Watermelon Peperomia gets its distinctive name from the beautiful watermelon-like stripes on its leaves which look like tiny watermelons and are famous for the same reason.

Watermelon Peperomia are not so easy house plants, but they aren’t too fussy either. They do best in bright indirect light. If exposed to too bright and direct sunlight the colour and pattern of the leaves might fade away.  However, these are not low-light houseplants either, so do not keep the plant in a place that receives very little light as it will affect the plant growth.

Watermelon Peperomias should be watered thoroughly and evenly, soaking through the potting soil so that the roots have plenty of water. Care should be taken to let the soil dry out between waterings to avoid root rot. It’s also important to keep a properly maintained drainage in the planter to avoid Peperomia from standing in water which may also lead to root rot. Being tropical in nature, these are used to higher levels of humidity. A Humidifier or a plant mister can be used every alternate days if the air gets too dry.

According to NASA research, Watermelon Peperomias are good air purifiers and helps in reducing the high level of Formaldehyde from indoors which makes them great for keeping Indoors. Also these can be kept in a house with pets as they aren’t toxic to dogs or cats.
